ABOUT THE LESSON |
Topic |
Water sampling container building theory |
Duration |
45 min |
Goal(s) of the lesson |
A theoretical understanding of the critical aspects of how to build a water sampling container. |
The big idea behind the topic |
General understanding of the project. Explaining a goal. The first stage in terms of boat building. Materials, tools, work methods. E.g. water resistance, add-on pieces, materials, length and width. The goal is to get an idea of the end result of the project. |
Results of the lesson |
The student knows the principles, tools, materials and work methods behind container building. Understands the content of the upcoming project. |
Competencies |
Work methods, materials, tools. |
Methods |
Lecture, brainstorming, group work. |
Connection with other modules |
The first lesson of the prototype building block. The physics module can take place before or after. |
Relevance to the curriculum |
Technology, engineering, physics |

STEP-BY-STEP ACTIVITIES |
Step 1 (2 min) |
Topic introduction. Brief overview of lesson objectives. |
Step 2 (18 min) |
The theoretical part. Explaining the choice of building a water collection container using a sump pump. Using the pump power from the boat's battery and the relatively short time to draw the required amount of water. Lightness and power. Corrosion resistance and water resistance. Availability and cost. Simple construction. Discussion of the disadvantages of using containers. |
Step 3 (5 min) |
Demonstration of materials. Discussing their physical characteristics. |
Step 4 (15 min) |
Practical task. Participants try to build a container model. The instructor helps and answers questions. |
Step 5 (5 min) |
Summary and discussion. A discussion of how the built model meets expectations. Answering participants' questions. Summary of the lesson and information about the next lessons. |
Assessment |
Discussion and feedback |
